The Sound of Music Lyrics.

Songs that have touched the hearts of people all round the world.

The moving story of the von Trapp family is told through the songs that are threaded through this colourful motion picture. It's probably the mixture of breathtaking scenery and the catchy melodies of the songs that made the Sound of Music movie such an international success.

The film opens with the powerful song "The Hills are Alive" and it's hard to believe that the following songs can match up to this one, but they do!

The Hills are Alive

After Maria was orphaned, she grew up with relatives in an atheist household. However, while at college she was so moved by a Palm Sunday sermon that she decided to become a nun. This is where the film starts. After her teacher training she joins the Benedictine Abbey of Nonnberg in Salzburg. Without any sort of religious upbringing at all Maria finds it hard to fit in with the strict rules and routines of the convent. She feels closed in and can't resist the almost permanent urge to be outside, free and in the fresh air.

The song is a tribute to the ageless and perpetual beauty of the mountains and is one of the reasons why so many Sound of Music fans journey to the Salzkammergut Lake District.

The hills are alive with the sound of music
With songs they have sung for a thousand years
The hills fill my heart with the sound of music
My heart wants to sing every song it hears

My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds
that rise from the lake to the trees
My heart wants to sigh like a chime that flies
from a church on a breeze
To laugh like a brook when it trips and falls over
stones on its way
To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray

I go to the hills when my heart is lonely
I know I will hear what I've heard before
My heart will be blessed with the sound of music
And I'll sing once more

I have confidence in me

When Maria sings the song "I have confidence in me" on her way to the von Trapp house for the first time, lovely images of Salzburg and the Salzkammergut Lake District are used as a back drop: Salzburg Cathedral, Residenz Square and the famous horse fountain. Even if you do go on a guided Sound of Music Tour, it's well worth going back to Salzburg on your own to wander through the narrow streets and across the impressive squares so typical of the city.

What will this day be like? I wonder.
What will my future be? I wonder.
It could be so exciting to be out in the world, to be free
My heart should be wildly rejoicing
Oh, what's the matter with me?

I've always longed for adventure
To do the things I've never dared
And here I'm facing adventure
Then why am I so scared

A captain with seven children
What's so fearsome about that?

Oh, I must stop these doubts, all these worries
If I don't I just know I'll turn back
I must dream of the things I am seeking
I am seeking the courage I lack

The courage to serve them with reliance
Face my mistakes without defiance
Show them I'm worthy
And while I show them
I'll show me

So, let them bring on all their problems
I'll do better than my best
I have confidence they'll put me to the test
But I'll make them see I have confidence in me

Somehow I will impress them
I will be firm but kind
And all those children (Heaven bless them!)
They will look up to me

And mind me with each step I am more certain
Everything will turn out fine
I have confidence the world can all be mine
They'll have to agree I have confidence in me

I have confidence in sunshine
I have confidence in rain
I have confidence that spring will come again
Besides which you see I have confidence in me

Strength doesn't lie in numbers
Strength doesn't lie in wealth
Strength lies in nights of peaceful slumbers
When you wake up -- Wake Up!

It tells me all I trust I lead my heart to
All I trust becomes my own
I have confidence in confidence alone
(Oh help!)

I have confidence in confidence alone
Besides which you see I have confidence in me!

I am Sixteen Going on Seventeen

Liesl is the oldest of the von Trapp children in the movie and helping her through the difficult transition from girl to woman is just one of the challenges Maria has to face. Liesl sneaks off to meet Rolf in the gazebo on the family estate. The duet that Rolf and Liesl sing address the timeless theme of young love. You can visit the very gazebo in which the scene was filmed at Hellbrunn Palace in Salzburg (The gazebo originally stood in the grounds of Leopoldskron Palace but was recently moved to offer visitors easier access).

Rolf:
You wait, little girl, on an empty stage
For fate to turn the light on
Your life, little girl, is an empty page
That men will want to write on

Liesl:
To write on

Rolf:
You are sixteen going on seventeen
Baby, it's time to think
Better beware, be canny and careful
Baby, you're on the brink

You are sixteen going on seventeen
Fellows will fall in line
Eager young lads and rogues and cads
Will offer you food and wine

Totally unprepared are you
To face a world of men
Timid and shy and scared are you
Of things beyond your ken

You need someone older an wiser
Telling you what to do
I am seventeen going on eighteen
I'll take care of you

Liesl:
I am sixteen going on seventeen
I know that I'm naive
Fellows I meet may tell me I'm sweet
And willingly I believe

I am sixteen going on seventeen
Innocent as a rose
Bachelor dandies, drinkers of brandies
What do I know of those

Totally unprepared am I
To face a world of men
Timid and shy and scared am I
Of things beyond my ken

I need someone older and wiser
Telling me what to do
You are seventeen going on eighteen
I'll depend on you

Do-Re-Mi

One of the most light-hearted parts of the film is when Maria teaches the children the song Do-Re-Mi. It captures the musical spirit of the film and the relationship between the children and their governess. Maria and the children have a lovely day out and you too can visit some of the places shown in the movie on the Original Sound of Music Sightseeing Tour. You can have your photo taken on the steps of the beautiful Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg, stand at the very abbey door in Nonnberg that the von Trapp children stood at when they were looking for Maria and visit St. Michaels Church in Mondsee which was the setting for Maria's wedding in the film.

Let's start at the very beginning
A very good place to start
When you read you begin with A-B-C
When you sing you begin with do-re-mi

Do-re-mi, do-re-mi
The first three notes just happen to be
Do-re-mi, do-re-mi

Maria:
Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti
spoken
Let's see if I can make it easy

Doe, a deer, a female deer
Ray, a drop of golden sun
Me, a name I call myself
Far, a long, long way to run
Sew, a needle pulling thread
La, a note to follow Sew
Tea, a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to Do (oh-oh-oh)

Maria and Children:

Repeat above verse twice

Maria:
Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do
So-do!

Maria: (spoken)
Now children, do-re-mi-fa-so and so on
are only the tools we use to build a song.
Once you have these notes in your heads,
you can sing a million different tunes by mixing them up.
Like this.

So Do La Fa Mi Do Re
(spoken)
Can you do that?
Children:
So Do La Fa Mi Do Re
Maria:
So Do La Ti Do Re Do
Children:
So Do La Ti Do Re Do
Maria:
spoken
Now, put it all together.

Maria and Children:
So Do La Fa Mi Do Re, So Do La Ti Do Re Do
Maria:
(spoken)
Good!
Brigitta:
(spoken)
But it doesn't mean anything.
Maria:
(spoken)
So we put in words. One word for every note. Like this.

When you know the notes to sing
You can sing most anything
(spoken)
Together!

Maria and Children:
When you know the notes to sing
You can sing most anything

Doe, a deer, a female deer
Ray, a drop of golden sun
Me, a name I call myself
Far, a long, long way to run
Sew, a needle pulling thread
La, a note to follow Sew
Tea, a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to Do

Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do
Do Ti La So Fa Mi Re

Children:
Do Mi Mi
Mi So So
Re Fa Fa
La Ti Ti
Repeat above verse 4x as Maria sings

Maria:
When you know the notes to sing
You can sing most anything

Maria and Children:
Doe, a deer, a female deer
Ray, a drop of golden sun
Me, a name I call myself
Far, a long, long way to run
Sew, a needle pulling thread
La, a note to follow Sew
Tea, a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to

Maria:
Children:

Do . . . So Do
Re . . . La Fa
Mi . . . Mi Do
Fa . . . Re
So . . . So Do
La . . . La Fa
Ti . . . La So Fa Mi Re
Ti Do - oh - oh Ti Do -- So Do

The Lonely Goat Herd

The fact that Maria chose a puppet theatre to keep the von Trapp children out of mischief also has its roots in Salzburg. The famous Salzburg Puppet Theatre is still going strong with one to two shows per day. New in the marionette's repertoire is "The Sound of Music" an absolutely fantastic opportunity to see the puppet show version of your favourite film, in its home town of Salzburg.

Staying at the wellness hotel Ebner's Waldhof means that you also have the chance to go on accompanied walks to mountain pastures and enjoy the spectacular views from the many stunning peaks in the area. We cannot guarantee that you'll see a goat herd, but you could try to teach the Waldhof's wellness representative Katharina the words to the song along the way!

High on a hill was a lonely goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Loud was the voice of the lonely goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Folks in a town that was quite remote heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Lusty and clear from the goatherd's throat heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

the Children:
O ho lay dee odl lee o, o ho lay dee odl ay
O ho lay dee odl lee o, lay dee odl lee o lay

Maria:
A prince on the bridge of a castle moat heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Kurt:
Men on a road with a load to tote heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

the Children:
Men in the midst of a table d'hote heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Maria:
Men drinking beer with the foam afloat heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

One little girl in a pale pink coat heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Brigitta:
She yodeled back to the lonely goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Maria:
Soon her Mama with a gleaming gloat heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
What a duet for a girl and goatherd
Maria and the Children:
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Maria and the Children:
Ummm (ummm) . . .
Odl lay ee (odl lay ee)
Odl lay hee hee (odl lay hee hee)
Odl lay ee . . .
. . . yodeling . . .

Child:
One little girl in a pale pink coat heard
Maria:
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hoo hoo
Child:
She yodeled back to the lonely goatherd
Maria:
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Maria:
Soon her Mama with a gleaming gloat heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hmm hmm
What a duet for a girl and goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Maria and the Children:
Happy are they lay dee olay dee lee o . . .
. . . yodeling . . .
Soon the duet will become a trio
Maria:
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Maria and the Children:
Odl lay ee, old lay ee
Odl lay hee hee, odl lay ee
Odl lay odl lay, odl lay odl lee, odl lay odl lee
Odl lay odl lay odl lay

the Children:
HOO!

Edelweiss

One of the most poignant moments of the film is when the Baron sings Edelweiss at the music festival. The scene was filmed in the Felsenreitschule one of Salzburg's most impressive concert halls. The Felsenreitschule is still a popular venue for many operas and concerts that are staged as part of the famous Salzburg Festival each year which attracts visitors from all over the world.

The edelweiss flower only grows naturally at high altitude. If you'd like to take on a challenge of conquering one of the really impressive mountains in the area, we can highly recommend the regularly organised hikes with Herbert Ebner the hotel proprietor. We can't guarantee that you'll find an edelweiss but we can guarantee breath taking views and a wonderful day out in the mountains of the Salzkammergut Lake District.

Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Every morning you greet me
Small and white, clean and bright
You look happy to meet me

Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow
Bloom and grow forever

Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Bless my homeland forever
