Discover the beauty of the Salzkammergut Lake District.
A ten minute drive from the wellness hotel Ebner's Waldhof will take you to the village of St. Gilgen which lies on the shores of Lake Wolfgang. The village is shown in one of the opening shots of the Sound of Music film. It is a lovely lakeside village with a typical onion-shaped church spire and was once home to Mozart's sister Nannerl. There is a regular passenger boat service which will take you across to the villages of Strobl and St. Wolfgang. If you'd like to follow in the footsteps of the von Trapp children, why not take a boat ride to St. Wolfgang, getting off at the Schafberg cog railway station and take a ride to the top of the mountain, just as Maria and the children did (a combi-ticket is available for the boat and railway which saves queuing). From the top of the Schafberg mountain you have fantastic views of the surrounding Lake District and the Dachstein glacier. Aerial shots of the lake are featured several times in the film and the whole Wolfgang Lake area is fantastic for walking: ask our wellness trainer Katharina or the reception staff for hiking tips in the region.
Whilst in St. Wolfgang it's well worth taking a few minutes to visit the pilgramage church with it's famous Pachar Altar.
If you happen to be staying at the wellness hotel Ebner's Waldhof in winter then a visit to the annual Christmas market is a real highlight; mulled wine, Christmas biscuits, Christmas carols, beautiful life-sized carved nativity scene, giant floating candle....
